My Approach to Astrology
Hello, I’m Julian. Thanks for your interest in my work as an astrologer.
Astrology has been both a vocation and a passion of mine for many years, and I’m pleased to be able to offer consultations again.
On these pages, and the linked FAQ, my aim is to explain how I approach this subject, how I’ve studied it, and what I believe makes it valuable. Astrology is essentially a worldview, so it’s difficult to encapsulate in a few paragraphs. Think of this simply as an introduction. There are many excellent resources online if you’re interested in independent study.
If you feel drawn to astrology and are considering a consultation, feel free to reach out with any questions not answered below.
How does astrology work?
This is challenging to answer logically, which is perhaps the first thing worth acknowledging.
Astrology proposes a meaningful connection between celestial bodies and human consciousness. Put another way: cosmic events correspond to our psychological states. The first objection people raise is that this must be a causal connection — ‘the planets make things happen to you’ — and then point out there’s no scientific evidence for such a mechanism. This is true.
However, there are relationships between things that operate more subtly than cause and effect. We’re influenced by symbols, dreams, and myths in ways we cannot rationally explain. It helps to at least entertain the possibility that planets may have a symbolic effect on us, a kind of mythic resonance, that cannot yet be scientifically measured or conventionally proven.
To study this subject, at some point you have to take a leap of faith. Not everyone is able or willing to do this, which I understand. Yet there are ways of proving things to yourself that don’t prioritize the rational mind. That’s why you also have intuition and emotional intelligence.
As a long-time student of astrology, I’ve had numerous moments where I’ve directly experienced a quality or energy I’d previously only read about. That’s when an idea becomes a conviction — when you experience it for yourself.
What is astrology useful for?
Astrology has existed for thousands of years, during which time our understanding of the cosmos, and our place in it, has changed enormously. Traditional and modern astrology coexist alongside Western, Indian, and Chinese variants, each with different functions and uses.
I’ve found astrology invaluable for two main reasons: it helps me understand myself, and it helps me understand the nature of periods of time.
Your natal chart—your birth horoscope—is an extraordinarily rich source of insight about your essential psychological nature, the themes that may unfold across your lifetime, and the opportunities and challenges you’ll encounter while developing those themes.
Our lives move through distinct stages or phases. When we look back at history, it’s easy to see how different one period was from another. Compare the 1970s with the 1980s, for example. We even talk about the ‘zeitgeist’ as though it’s a quality that can be measured. In our own lives too, we experience what feel like seasons of growth.
Astrology helps us identify these seasons and offers a framework for anticipating how they might emerge in our future.
Essential questions to ask yourself
Some people wonder if astrology can predict the future. But this assumes the future is fixed, which raises deeper questions worth considering.
Do you view your future as fated? Do you believe you have complete freedom to develop along your chosen path? Or is it a mixture of the two – certain patterns and structures that shape your journey, while leaving room for choice within those patterns?
Think back over your life. Are there periods you recognise as having been especially challenging or particularly generative? Were these triggered by specific events, or do you remember them more as seasons – ‘my teenage years,’ ‘when we lived in that city,’ ‘after the separation’?
Do you notice that you respond strongly to certain times of year? To the cycles of the moon, perhaps, or particular seasons? Many people find they’re more energised or introspective during specific periods without quite knowing why.
If you recognise patterns and structures in your life – if you sense that different periods of time carry different qualities – then astrology offers a language and framework for understanding these experiences more deeply.
